Sound the Alarm

Dawson County Emergency Services recently partnered with the American Red Cross on June 6 to host a Sound the Alarm home fire safety event focused on reducing the risk of fire-related injuries and deaths in the community. During the event, volunteers went door-to-door offering free smoke alarm installations and smoke alarm checks for residents.

Volunteers from the Rotary Club and Big Canoe Serves, the event made eight homes safer, installed 26 smoke alarms, and served 35 residents throughout the community.

“This is a big step toward our goal of having working smoke alarms in every residence in Dawson County,” said John Shaffer, Community Risk Reduction Specialist for Dawson County Emergency Services. “Working smoke alarms save lives, and we appreciate the partnership and volunteer support that helped make this event a success.”

“Helping install working smoke alarms in homes with children, while also educating families about home fire safety, was a very gratifying experience,” said Charlie Armstrong of Big Canoe Serves. “I look forward to participating in the next event.”
